We are here to make a difference.

“We are there for our students, through all of their challenges.”

Sixth Form represents the final two years of Secondary School, serving as a preparatory phase for students as they transition to higher education and beyond the confines of the classroom. Susan is a sensible and competent lead, to shepherd our students through this crucial stage.

Born and bred in Berlin and with family roots in Lebanon, Ms Hakam moved to the UK as a young adult. She started working life with a generosity of spirit that continues to colour everything she does. After her Abitur, she dedicated a year to volunteering, engaging in various organisations aimed at assisting those in need. The experience of lending a hand brought her a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction.

Following this experience, Ms Hakam completed a Degree at the University of Bath in Psychology and Sociology. Her studies included a placement year working in a children’s psychiatric outpatient ward and a counselling and advice service for young people. After a 5-year stint in sales and marketing in mobile telecommunications, she wanted to contribute to a different purpose.

Coming from a family of teachers, she was inspired to pursue a career in teaching, driven by her genuine passion for education. Ms Hakam obtained her Postgraduate Certificate, marking the beginning of her teaching career.

Amongst other roles, she spearheaded setting up the A-level provision for Psychology and Sociology at a school situated in a socio-economically challenging area. The students entering Sixth Form at this school were remarkable; often lacking support from home, they were the first in their families to pursue Sixth Form and University education. Susan feels deeply appreciative to have had the privilege of guiding them along their academic journey.

After several further teaching and management roles, and raising three children of her own, Ms Hakam felt it was time to go back to Germany. She loves living in Duisburg and being part of our community. In her role at St.George’s, Ms Hakam has maintained her passion for educating and supporting students, not only in terms of academic achievement, but also in dealing with pressures and expectations.
