The majority of pupils work towards two qualifications in English in Upper School; IGCSE English Language and IGCSE English Literature.
The English Language course aims to develop students reading and writing skills. By exploring a wide range or writing in English, students learn to read critically and infer meaning, as well as develop their own ability to manipulate the language in writing. Text studied include both fiction and non-fiction, for example contemporary accounts, autobiographies, short stories, poems and articles
English Literature focusses on the study of drama, prose and poetry. Students gain an understanding of the social and historical context in which the texts were produced, and an appreciation of linguistic devices, characterisation and plot development. They expand their own analytical skills and are able to recognise how writers use language to develop setting, imagery, symbolism and emotion.
In Upper School, students follow courses in German that suit their level in the language.
First language speakers, and those students who have attained a high level of proficiency in German, follow a course based on the local curriculum for Gymnasien. This encompasses both linguistic and literary study. Students develop their appreciation of the language through the exploration of wide range of literary and non-literary texts and develop their ability to express themselves in a variety of forms.
Second language speakers work towards qualifications which challenge them to expand their skills in the language. Provision is made for students learning that language at various Levels.
IGCSE Mathematics provides the opportunity for all students, whatever their ability, to gain an appreciation of the importance of Mathematics in society, employment and study.
In addition to the academic requirements, the course enables pupils to enjoy using and applying mathematical techniques and concepts, thus gaining confidence in the use of mathematics to solve problems.
The course provides a strong foundation for further study and focusses on the key areas of number, algebra, shape and space and handling data.
Some students follow an accelerated programme and have the opportunity to take advanced qualifications in Mathematics at this Level.
Students follow a ‘double’ course in combined science. This includes courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and results in two IGCSE qualifications.
This provides a strong foundation for further study in Science. All IGCSE science qualifications stress the importance of scientific method and encourage practical work wherever appropriate. The curriculum has been designed so that subjects are specific in depth and detail and include practical experiments which students are expected to carry out during the course.
The language option allows students to further develop their skills in a third modern European language.
The course aims to enable students to communicate effectively in a variety of everyday situations, including the personal and social life, the world of education and work, the environment and technology. Emphasis is place on both accuracy and range of expression speaking and writing, as well as developing receptive skills of reading and listening for detail.
The IGCSE course in History encompasses modern world and European history, and includes international relations. Students study history both in outline and in depth.
The course aims to foster a knowledge and understanding of specific periods and aspects of history. Students explore the significance of historical events, people, changes and issues, and develop their ability to use historical sources critically. They are encouraged to organise and communicate their knowledge and understanding clearly, and to draw conclusions or judgements from historical information.
The Geography course in Upper School aims to further develop students understanding of systems in the human and natural world.
The curriculum allows students to develop a broader awareness of the importance of Geography in the modern day world. Students have the opportunity to engage in research and debate in the classroom, as well as fieldwork activities outside school.
Students are encouraged to develop their understanding of global issues and their role in the world. This promotes ideas of citizenship whilst encouraging approaches to a more sustainable world.
Music in Upper School allows students to experience and appreciate a wide range of musical styles, from classical to pop. This allows them to explore the richness of music through their own interests.
Throughout the course, students combine practical performance skills with theoretical skills of composition and appraisal. Students have a range of opportunities to make music, both individually and in groups, as well as to evaluate their performance and the performance of others.
The Computer Science course provides students with the skills they need to understand a world which is becoming increasingly dominated by computerised systems.
Students investigate the components of computer systems and how these interact with each other. Systems studied include both physical networks and the World Wide Web. Students learn the importance of algorithms, how they are used and how they can be interpreted and amended. They are also encouraged to consider the wider implications of technological developments on individuals and society, as well as ethical, legal and ownership issues.
This course encourages an adventurous and enquiring approach to Art and Design.
Successful students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of past and contemporary art and design. In addition, they will be able to produce a personal response that embraces a range of ideas.
Not only do students develop practical artistic skills and abilities, but also they encounter a wide range of art in its various contexts. Students therefore grow as both practitioners and critics.
All students follow core Physical Education lessons to help them maintain their physical fitness. Students may also opt to follow an IGCSE course in Physical Education, which allows them to explore wider theory and practice.
The IGCSE course aims to improve students’ ability to plan, perform and evaluate physical activity. They also increase their knowledge and understanding of physical activity and its value as a part of healthy living.
The course consists of both practical and theoretical work. Students learn about the body and how this can affect physical performance. They also study how to train correctly and develop a greater understanding of the concepts and analysis of sports Coaching.
The Economics course provides students with a broad understanding of economic concepts and how these are visible in the modern world.
Students consider their personal economic decisions and develop an understanding their roles as consumers and producers in a global economy. They examine how recessions and spending booms occur. The course also explores government macroeconomic policies, and how these aim to achieve objectives of full employment, low inflation, balance of payments, economic growth and sustainable development.
Drama encourages students develop creative and communicative skills, working individually and in groups to realise their ideas.
Students have the opportunity to explore a range of dramatic texts and use these to develop their ability to communicate thought and feeling in performance. Students are expected to engage critically with the works studied, as well as with the performances of themselves and others. Evaluation and reflection are key skills, alongside practical and creative ability.
